Meet Justin Michael

Justin Michael has been fascinated with broadcasting for as long as he can remember. In sixth grade, he created his own country radio station from his bedroom using store-bought equipment and a low-power FM transmitter that his grandfather may or may not have modified.

His path into radio began at 13, when longtime Southern California personality Sweet Dick Whittington gave him an internship at KNJO in Thousand Oaks. Justin quickly discovered that broadcasting suited him better than making coffee. During one early-morning shift, he melted the plastic coffee-filter holder and came close to setting the machine on fire.

By 16, Justin was hosting his own request show on KHAY in Ventura. He later worked at several country and non-country stations before landing at Country 93.9 KZLA in Los Angeles. As someone who grew up listening to KZLA, working there was a dream come true. His career has also included work with nationally syndicated programs such as The Rick Dees Weekly Top 40, After MidNite Weekends with Whitney Allen, On Air with Ryan Seacrest, and Sixx Sense with Nikki Sixx.

Today, Justin works from his home studio in Las Vegas and can be heard on stations around the country. He hosts mornings on The New MY 97.5 in California's Central Valley, middays on AV Country 106.9 in California's Antelope Valley, and afternoon drive on Eagle Country 105.7 in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Justin is also the creator and host of The 90s Country Countdown, a weekly syndicated radio show that travels back to a different year in the 1990s to count down the 20 biggest country songs from this same week in that year. The show also features stories from the decade, artist spotlights, and a trivia challenge.

His interest in broadcasting goes beyond being on the radio. Justin enjoys television, live video, production, and the technical work involved in building and running a show. That combination of interests eventually led him to TikTok Live.

Nearly every night, Justin hosts Boot Scootin' Country Live, a live '90s country request show built around music, requests, conversation, and listener interaction. What started as a live music stream has grown into a welcoming community of country music fans who return night after night.

When he is not working on a show, Justin is usually at home with his Blue Heeler mix, Patches, who is a big reason he does not leave the house very often. Even though he lives in Las Vegas, he still watches KTLA like he never left Los Angeles, keeps up with high-speed police chases, scrolls through TikTok Live before bed, eats more desserts than he probably should, and spends far too much money on DoorDash.

Whether he is hosting a radio show, working behind the scenes, or spending an evening with his online community, Justin still enjoys the same basic thing that drew him to broadcasting as a kid: putting together a show and connecting with people.

Featured on CNN: Car Chases and Twitter Traffic

June 14, 2014

Twenty years after the O.J. Simpson Bronco chase, CNN looked at how social media changed the way people follow breaking news and live police pursuits. I was featured in Kyung Lah’s report about the growing community of people following and sharing car-chase updates on Twitter.
